Home and Homeopathic Remedies for Cold Sores/Fever Blisters

Joe Nowell at The Fresh Pharmacy, a Natural Medicine Compounding Pharmacy in Lenoir City shares some home and homeopathic remedies for Fever Blisters/Cold Sores. Cold sores can be more than just a pain in the lip, they may also disfigure your bank account pretty hard.  Most OTC remedies can be $20 or more and they just treat a sore once its already throbbing away.  Lets not even start with prescriptions remedies that can cost 5 times as much.  What you may not know is that there are several home remedies and homeopathic fix its that can help prevent or treat fever blisters that you might have on hand already!

1. Lysine
This amino acid found naturally in our bodies can be very effective at both treating and preventing cold sores. So if you know you are especially prone to sores you might want to take Lysine on a regular basis.  For instance I typically get cold sores when I go on vacation or have a lot of exposure to the sun, so I make sure to take Lysine the month before such planned exposure.  A recommended dose for Lysine is 1250 mg per day!

2. Mix your own Miracle Mouthwash Home!

You can mix a remedy for your fever blister right at home using products that are probably already in your medicine cabinet!  Using equal parts, mix together Milk of Magnesia, Kaopectate, and Benadryl.  These common OTC medications will help coat sores in your mouth so that they are less painful and also help to reduce swelling.

3. Prevent Cold Sores by Changing your Diet!
What you're eating may be a huge contributing factor to those pesky sores.  Foods that are more acidic may cause fever blisters.  If you are prone to sores try cutting out citrus or tomatoes.

4. Make it Hot!

Like your food spicy?  While it may not seem like a good idea to put pepper on your fever blister some say that applying cayenne pepper to your blister may help it to heal.  Caution, this may hurt!

5. Make a Rinse with Household Items

Mix together 1 tsp of salt and 1 tsp of baking soda and 2 ounces of hydrogen peroxide.  You can use this rinse 4 times daily.  If you aren't brave enough for this stout mixture, feel free to dilute it with a couple ounces of water.

6. Some Sage Advice...

Another remedy that you can find in your kitchen or may even grow in your herb garden: sage.  To use sage for your blister steep the sage in boiling water then let it cool before rinsing out your mouth.  Again, this remedy is better for sores inside the mouth.
